Please see the email below and the information sheet about the Chase Mann race to be held on December 18th.    Last year, this was a large event and we had a lot of LR runners attend.  It would be great for LR to show their support again for Chase (former Broughton runner that is now paralyzed).

Subject: 2nd annual Chasin' the Challenge - Sunday, December 18, Wake Med XC Park
Coaches, the Broughton Cross Country Coaches would be very appreciative of your help in getting the word out about this year’s race to raise money to help provide support for Chase Mann, a 2010 Broughton graduate and member of the XC and Track teams, who was paralyzed in a diving accident shortly after graduation. Many of you who have been in the cross country community for a few years may remember Chase’s dad, Larry Mann, a Raleigh pediatrician who was instrumental in the creation of Wake County XC Parent Education Group. Below is information about the event, and a flyer is attached. Please distribute this information to your team members, their parents, and any others who may be interested in participating. We had tremendous support from the HS Cross Country Community at last year’s event, and hope for similar support this year.

Once again,  I would like to thank everyone for the gifts and the support you have provided me.  It was great to see several of my former runners and their parents tonight.  I have received many emails from other former runners that no longer live in around Raleigh and were unable to attend.     It has been a great experience coaching at LR and I hate it has to end.
I would really appreciate copies of the many pictures we took tonight.  It is always great to look back at pictures of former runners and remember the great memories.

Here is the end of the year booklet for this cross country season.  I started putting these end of the year books together when I started coaching back in 1999 because I didn't have any of my old stats from when I ran in high school and thought it would be a good idea to put everything together in one packet for the kids to keep and hopefully not lose.  It might not mean much now, but the runners will enjoy looking back at this when they get older.     It is kinda long, so hopefully everyone can open it without any problems.  Let me know if you see any errors in it.

ncpreptrack.com often keeps up with former NC runners and recently posted some results that included former LR Runner Lauren Strapp.   Lauren is coming off some injuries and sickness from her freshman year but seems to be coming back strong this year after getting a medical redshirt for last year.    Lauren is the best female distance runner in LR history and is now competing at William & Mary.  You can go to ncpreptrack.com and click on Misc. News to see articles about former NC runners.   We currently have 5 other LR track & field athletes competing in college.  Michael and Nate Wooten are at Wake Forest Univ.,  Paige Eley is at N.C. State., Tony Bunn is at East Carolina Univ., and Hailey Blackburn is running at UNC-Wilmingtion   .... I think all the others have already graduated from college.

For those of you that are new to my teams.....here is an article that I have sent out several times over the years that I think is an important message to teenagers and parents about how life isn't always fair, and sometimes individuals aren't always as important as they think they are.

Take a minute (actually about 7 minutes) and watch this video.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp15N9BbYgY
It takes until about the 5min. mark of the video before you start getting the message.   Athletes should realize the privilege that it is to be a part of an athletic team and the responsibility that goes along with being an athlete.   I know this video is referring to college football but you can easily plug in "high school", "Leesville Road", and "Cross Country" when he refers to college,  his own school, and his sport.   All athletes need to realize that it is a privilege to compete in athletics and they have a responsibility to represent their team, families, school, and  community in the best way possible.   Other athletes, peers, family members, and younger athletes look at you and learn from your actions.   It is important to set the best example possible because you never know who might be watching and who might look up to you.   Don't take your privilege and responsibility for granted.

Parents:     Runners are expected to do a cool down run, general strength, stretch and clean up after each race
.  Please make sure you allow your child an additional 45mins. after the meet for them to get these items accomplished.   Cooling down, G.S., stretching, and cleaning up are important parts of the race day procedures and ALL runners are expected to take part. This does not just apply to tomorrow....this applies to all meets (home & away meets).
Thanks for your help.

FORMS:I have already sent these forms out once....but they are linked here in case you missed them in the email.  All three of these forms must be completed and turned into ME before you can attend any summer workouts or tryouts.
Athletic Participation / Physical
Off Campus Running
Travelling Information

WCPSS High School physicals are valid for 365 days, so please ask me if you have a valid physical on file here at LRHS.  Middle school runners coming up to LRHS will need to get a new physical on the form.  Middle School athletic physicals will NOT be valid here at LRHS.

An Off Campus Running form will needed to be signed by the runner and parent.

A Travel Form will also have to be filled out.  A new Off Campus Running Form and Travel Form must be filled out for each season.  I will need a new one, even if you turned one in this past spring.

SHOES / WATCHES:Everyone needs good running shoes and a watch.  Please make sure you have a watch and good running shoes before you start summer training.

I have had several parents ask about how scoring works....    The top 5 runners from each team score points for their team.    1st place = 1pt.   2nd place = 2pts.  etc.           The best score a team can get in a dual meet is 15   and the worst score a team can get in a dual meet is 50pts.

Items that athletes must have while during workouts:
  • Water
  • Watch
  • Running log
  • Good running shoes.
Go to Raleigh Running Outfitters off Six Forks Road and have them help you pick out the best shoes for you.   Avoid going to chain sporting goods stores.

Here is a link to a website that was put together by the Wake County XC Parent Education Group: http://www.xcnutrition.com
Every parent and runner needs to read the information on this website.    There is good information about hydration (when to drink and what to drink), nutrition ( when to eat and what to eat), iron deficiencies, and a lot of info. that every runner and parent should know.    I have been stressing to the runners the importance of stretching, hydration, nutrition, and sleep.   Parents can play a big role making sure the runners eat, drink, stretch, and sleep properly.   All of these things will make HUGE impact on the runners ability to perform at practice and at meets.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

Please remember that communication is extremely important.   Please let me know ahead of time about any practices that might need to be missed and then I can determine if it is excused or unexcused.    If I am not notified ahead of time, then it will be considered unexcused unless it is an extreme emergency.

Sickness Prevention: Please make an effort to wash hands as often as possible, use hand sanitizer, and practice general sickness prevention more than normal.    This includes NOT DRINKING OR EATING AFTER OTHERS!!!..   Even if someone does not seem to be sick, do not drink or eat anything that they have put in their mouth!    There are a lot of flu cases and other sickness at school.  This would be a horrible time to get sick in the season.  If you think you are getting sick, please see a doctor ASAP to prevent it from getting worse.

Please stay hydrated!!  Drink water when you get up in the morning and continue to drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated.  DO NOT DRINK SODAS!!!!

EMAILS....   please do not think I am ignoring you if I do not respond to your emails.   Unless you ask me a specific question I will probably not respond.   I do read the emails and pay attention to them.... but I typically do not respond due to the LARGE number of emails I get each day.   Please continue to send me the emails... I like being informed about issues, but just do not be bothered by the fact that I might not be able to respond to them all.

PLEASE do your part in recruiting new athletes that can make our program stronger.  Please forward any emails and this web site address with upcoming 8th graders (or their parents) that you think might be interested in running OR anyone that is already at LRHS that you think might be interested!!!

Past 2011 Meets and Past Seasons:

Here are the results from the 8/20/11 meet at WakeMed.
The results have each runner's finishing place and time....and just so you have an idea of how it compares to the rest of the runners, here is how many runners were in each race.
Girls' 9th/10th Grade Race had 149 runnners
Girls' 11th/12th Grade Race had 146 runners
Boys' 9th/10th Grade Race had 159 runners
Boys' 11th/12th Grade Race had 168 runners

Here are the results from the meet with Apex, Cardinal Gibons, and Cary on 8/24/11.

Here are the results from the Providence Invitational meet on 8/27/11.
You can find full meet results from theProvidence Invitational meet at http://kurtniedenzu.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/2011+Providence+CC+Invitational
The girls varsity team finished 10th out of 40 teams entered.
The boys varsity team finished 12th out of 40 teams entered.
Both boys and girls JV teams finished in 3rd place in their races.

Here are the results from the meet with Enloe on 8/29/11.
The boys lost 19-36.  The girls won by a perfect score of 15-50.

The teams had a very good showing at the Jungle Run on 9/4/11.   We won all 4 races that we were in and  we had 2 Individual Champions with Megan McGuire winning the girls' JV race in 21:26 and Nate Purich winning the boys' JV race in 18:11.   LRHS runners walked away with a total of 30 medals last night...needless to say, that is many more than any other team.     All of the races were impressive and we won all easily, but the girls JV team ran a perfect score of 15 by placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the race.
Take a minute and look at the results to see all times / scores.  The document has 2 pages, so you will need to scroll down to get to the varsity times/scores.
www.ncrunners.com should have a write up on the meet sometime today and they already have some pictures posted of our teams getting awards.

Both boys and girls won at the 9/28 meet with Millbrook.   The boys won with a perfect score of 15-50 and the girls swept the top 5 places and had a score of 15-48.   Here are the full meet results.

Here are LRHS results from Saturday's meet at UNCW.

Here are the results from the 9/14 meet with Wakefield

Here are the results from the 9/21 meet with Sanderson

Here are the results from the Great American XC meet on 10/1 for LRHS runners
Here are some of the improvements we saw at the Great American XC meet on 10/1.
The time listed is the amount they dropped from their previous PR.  If the time has "JR" beside it, then that means their previous PR was at Jungle Run.  Jungle Run is without a doubt the fastest course in NC and is a little short.  So, if a runner runs faster on a moderately difficult course (WakeMed)  than they did at Jungle Run, then you know they have improved a lot.

 Runner:        Time they dropped:
BOYS:
Kyle Rathke:  1.24
Craig Berwick:  .58  (JR)
Anthony Stapp:  .48 (JR)
Alex Boatman:   .38
David Schuler:   .36
Ian Johnston:    .33 (JR)
Alex Zoltek:      .31
Michael Bloemeke:  .17  (JR)
Peter Marino:     .12  (JR)
Jared DeJoya:   .11  (JR)
Victor Simpson:   .08
Andrew Byrum:   .08
Ryan Quinn:      .07 (JR)
Carson Ellerby:   Tied his PR
GIRLS:
Haley Rea:  2.46
Lane Hering:  1.15  (JR)
Jessica Merdes:  1.09
Emily Echols:   1.02
Cassidi Inlge:  .46
Jordan Mareno:  .27  (JR)
Courtney Holmes:  .20  (JR)
Bri Marino:   .06 (JR)

I should also mention that Teddy Elshof ran TWO 5k races at the Great American XC meet .
He ran the JV 1 race and told me he felt great and wanted to run another race.....so we threw a new number and chip on him and he ran another 5k within 20mins. of finishing his first 5k.   He ran 18:44 in the first 5k and then ran 18:58 in the second 5k.   Neither time was his PR, but both times were within 25 secs. of his time at Jungle Run.  I would consider both times his best performances of the year.  Needless to say, this is the only time I have ever had a runner ask and/or run two 5k races on the same day.   That is dedication and desire to perform if I have ever seen it!

Here are the results from the meet with Heritage on 10/5.   The girls won with a score of 23 to 34.  The boys won with a score of 18 to 43.    I believe all the runners enjoyed the meet and the cake afterwards.  I appreciate all the parents that helped with the meet and brought items for the senior event.

Results 10/8/11 '4-Runner Only' meet at Beeson Park...
Complete LRHS results.
Highlights:
Boys Varsity team finished 5th out of 29 teams.  Girls Varsity finished 4th out of 31 teams.
Boys JV team finished 2nd in the "unofficial" JV state championship race  and the girls JV team finished 4th.
Kaitlyn Stempien ran a PR of 20:13 which moved her into the TOP 25 ALL TIME 5k Runners in LR History.  She is now number 21 on that list. We had 15 runners PR today.
And for the 2nd week in a row....we had a runner double-up and run two 5k races in the same day.  Meredith Hicks ran 21:23 (her 2nd fastest 5k time ever) and then came back with a 22:03 in another race.
The runners are looking great and it should be interesting to see how the next 3 weeks go.

Here are the CAP-8 Varsity Boys results and Varsity Girls results from 10/18/11.  The JV results are combined and the conference does not score the JV race.   Despite the higher temperature yesterday, that slowed down the races, we still had 5 runners PR yesterday.

Here are the full meet girls and boys results from the 4A Mideast Regionals held on 10/29/11.   Despite cold and very wet conditions, we still had 2 runners PR.  Jordan Mareno ran 21:06 and Steven Bigelow ran 18:14.   The girls team finished in 6th place (much higher than they were predicted to finish) and only 24pts away from making the state championship meet.

Here are the overall race results as of 10/19/11...
