NEWS:11/29/09

Andrew Byrum, Sam Sarakbi, and Lauren Strapp ran in the Footlocker South Regional Cross Country meet on Saturday, 11/28/09 at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.       Andrew and Sam ran in the Sophomore race.  Andrew finished 2nd with a time of 15:58.  That is only 13 secs. off the sophomore record and puts him in 8th place on the LRHS Top 25 for cross country.   Sam ran 17:23 in the sophomore race.  Lauren ran 19:10 in the seeded girls' race.

The LRHS Cross Country Web Site will be idle until Summer 2010. Please visit the LRHS Track Web Site to stay up to date with LRHS track and field events.

Reminders and Past Results:

Here is a copy of the 2009 LRHS Cross Country Results booklet. You can print it out and put together your own book or save it.  You will probably enjoy looking back at it years from now.

Andrew Byrum, Sam Sarakbi, and Lauren Strapp ran at Broughton on 11/20/09 in a 3200m race.     Andrew ran a PR of 9:49.  Sam ran a PR of 10:17, and Lauren tied her PR of 11:18.        All of these times are very impressive and are a direct result of their hard work and dedication.  These are not official results.  Official results should be posted at www.ncrunners.com soon.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Andrew Byrum ran 9:55 in a 3200m race last on 11/8/09 at Reagan High School.   Andrew along with a few other cross country runners are still training for the Footlocker South Regional Cross Country Meet that will be held at the end of the month.

State Meet results from 11/7/09   Lauren Strapp ran 20:04 and Aaron Smith ran 17:10 on a VERY SLOW course.    Sanderson's boys won the team state championship and Green Hope won the girls team state championship.

The boys finished 5th and the girls finished 10th at the regional meet today (10/31/09).   Despite having one of the best male teams in LRHS history and without a doubt one of the top teams in the state, the boys did not qualify for the state championships as a team. Aaron Smtih qualified as an individual and will be running next weekend at Tanglewood.  Lauren Strapp qualified as an individual on the girls side.

Aaron Smith, Brian Jackson, and Lauren Strapp were All-Region.

I need everyone to turn in their XC uniform ASAP.     I normally let athletes planning on running Indoor or Outdoor track keep the uniforms, but I need everyone to turn in uniforms this year so I can get an accurate inventory of uniforms so I can start ordering more new uniforms.

CAP-7 Results:

Here are the full CAP-7 meet results
FYI:  The girls average time was the best average time they have had since the conference championship team in 2006 and the boys had an average time of 16:34, which is better than the state championship team's average in 2007 and would put us 2nd in the 2006 state meet.    Just a reminder of how good our conference is this year

The boys finished 3rd and the girls finished 4th. 20 out of the 29 athletes running for Leesville today ran the best time they have all year.
The girls team had 2 All-Conference runners:  Lauren Strapp and Emily Putnam
The boys team had 5 All-Conference runners: Andrew Byrum, Brian Jackson, Christian Klute, Bilo Hoese, and Aaron Smith
Today's TEAM places do not truly show how good we are by any means.  It just shows how good the CAP-7 is.
Our boys had 6 runners under 17:00 mins.  and our number 7 runner was at 17:02.
We were the only team to have 5 All-Conference runners.
We had all  5 scoring runners in before any other team.
4 out of our girls top 7 ran PRs and all top 7 were under 23:08 which is better than last yr's team that finished 3rd at the CAP-7 meet.
Our top 2 girls average time was around 19:40 which is better than any top 2 LRHS has had in at least 7yrs.

Here is a list of the CAP-7 Team scores.

Once I get the full meet results, I will email them to you.   They should be posted at ncrunners.com  and ncpreptrack.com in the next day or so as well.

Here is an updated TOP 25 List and a spread sheet showing all LRHS runners race times for this year.   Times that are in BOLD just show who the top 7 were in each race.  This is how I determine who letters varisty.  Times that are UNDERLINED are the best times for this year for the athletes.

Here are the results from our last regular season meet, a Tri-Meet with Wake Forest Rolesville and Wakefield. Results of this meet will help determine who will race in the Varsity race at the CAP-7 Championships on Oct. 20th.

Here is a table showing all the race results for LRHS athletes so far this season.

Here are the full meet results from the 9/30 meet with Millbrook.   Both boy's and girl's teams did lose, but several runners did actually PR today on our course.  Our next meet will be at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday for the Great American XC Festival.

Sickness Prevention: Please make an effort to wash hands as often as possible, use hand sanitizer, and practice general sickness prevention more than normal.    This includes NOT DRINKING OR EATING AFTER OTHERS!!!..   Even if someone does not seem to be sick, do not drink or eat anything that they have put in their mouth!    There are a lot of flu cases and other sickness at school.  This would be a horrible time to get sick in the season.  If you think you are getting sick, please see a doctor ASAP to prevent it from getting worse.

Here is an article from the News and Observer showing the highlights from the Great American meet. Full results can be found at 'www.ncrunners.com'.   You can also go to the meet website 'http://www.nationalscholastic.org/greatamerican'.

The Great American meet had its ups and downs.  We had several athletes run PRs again and we also had some athletes that were off their normal races.   I keep reminding everyone and the athletes that they can not PR every race!  That would basically be impossible to do.       We can just hope than everyone can put together a good race all on the same day.   We have less than month before conference and regionals.  Everyone needs to keep working hard and do everything they can to prevent sickness and injury.

Here is the summary Dyestat.com posted about the Reebok Wolfpack Invite.  Dyestat.com is a national website dedicated to Cross Country and Track.   LRHS is currently listed as a "bubble team" for the SouthEast Region Top 10.   You can visit 'www.dyestat.com' and find info. about top teams in the nation and the SE Region.

Congrats to the boys team for finishing 2nd in the Championship Race on Saturday (9/19) at the Reebok Wolfpack Invite.   We were only 2pts behind 1st. Here is Saturday's News & Observer article, and the complete race results for...
Girls JV
Girls Championship
Boys JV
Boys Championship

Lauren Strapp ran a PR of 18:30 and is now the top female 5k runner in LRHS history.
Aaron Smith
ran a PR of 16:24 and moved to 16th on the All Time Top 25.
Andrew Byrum
also ran a PR of 16:43 and moved to 22nd on the list.

Congrats to the boys and girls teams for winning against Wakefield.   The girls score was 24-31.  The boys score was 17-46.   Here are the complete results.
I greatly appreciate all the parents that work at the finish line, cover the course, bring water/gatorade, and come to support the team.

Here are the race results for LRHS runners at the Seahawks meet.  The LRHS boys finished in 5th place. The girls finished in 17th place. The JV boys finished in 8th place. The JV girls finished in 11th place.

I talked about weekend invitationals several times this season so far and I have NOT had any athletes tell me that they needed to miss a weekend meet.   Please look at your calendars NOW and let me know ASAP if you will not be able to attend any of the weekend meets for XC.  Entries and Entry Fees are due to these meets way in advance and we can not afford to enter an athlete and then have the athlete back out of the meet.  I can not substitute athletes once someone has been entered.   SO, please look at the following dates and make sure you can attend these dates.   Realize that not all of the athletes will go to these meets.  Only the top 14 runners will go to invitationals.   The top 14 can easily change from week to week.

I am slowly phasing in new uniforms for cross country and Track & Field.  I was only able to purchase 10 new uniforms for this school year and that means that the majority of the cross country and Track & Field team will have to wear the older uniforms.   I am making it possible for athletes to purchase their own new uniform which can be worn for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.  The cost is $60.00 for the uniform which is pretty cheap compared to most uniforms.   I really encourage as many athletes as possible to purchase these new uniforms so they will have their own uniform and they will no longer have to worry about getting a bad looking uniform or getting a size that doesn't fit them properly.    I will make an order for these new uniforms on Friday for anyone who would like to buy one. Here is an order form.  You can use this or you can just bring me a sheet of paper with your name and what size you would like along with $60.00.  If you pay by check, please make the check out to Johnson-Lambe.  It takes 4-5 weeks to get these uniforms in, that is why I am emailing all the track athlets/parents as well as the cross country athletes so you can have a new uniform before track season starts.   I will make another order once track season gets here, BUT you will not get the uniform until half way through the track season if you wait to order one then.  Here is an image of what the top looks like.

  • Practices will be at 2:45 Monday-Friday on school days.
  • Please remember that all athletes will have to leave campus OR go to the cafeteria for study hall on Wednesdays from 1:18 (when school is released) and practice time (2:45)

I would like to thank everyone that has volunteered.   The cross country parents are great and you play a very important part in the success of the program.

SATURDAY PRACTICES:
The team will meet at Umstead Park on Saturdays at 8am to do their workouts.  Use the main entrance off Glenwood (Hwy 70) and meet at the last parking lot.   I will not be at these practices at Umstead, but there are typically a lot of other high school teams training there and I feel it is a safe setting for the athletes to train.   Since I am not going to attend these practices, they are not mandatory practices but HIGHLY recommended.  Athletes are much more likely to do their Saturday runs and will be more likely to do quality runs if they run with their team mates.

Here is a picture of the new uniform top.    I have ordered enough for the varsity runners and I will continue to purchase more over the next few years, but we are going to give all the athletes the chance to order their own uniform.      The shorts for the girls will be tight fitting and the boys will have normal shorts.   The white stripes coming down from the jersey will also be on the shorts.   I do not have an exact price yet, but it will probably be around $50.00.              Once I get the new uniforms in, I will let the athletes try them on so they will know what sizes to order.   This order will probably be placed around the end of August.

Athletes will be keeping a training log that they will update each day.  I will keep these here at school.  I will provide all the paper.  The kids need to bring the binder.

Athletes need a watch for training...   They MUST bring a watch to practice EVERYDAY!!

***   Please make sure all athletes stay hydrated!!  They need to drink water when they get up in the morning and continue to drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated.  DO NOT DRINK SODAS!!!!

Athletes are expected to attend every practice from Aug. 1st until the end of the season.     Anyone who is planning on missing practices / tryouts is responsible for letting me know about any missed practices AHEAD of time.   Missed tryouts / practices can result in being cut from the team or being held out of upcoming meets.

Here is the Rules / Expectations sheet for Cross Country.   Every athlete and their parents need to READ and SIGN this form and turn in ASAP.   Please make sure you read this form!!!      Take note of different practice times before school starts.

Here is the Guide for Off Campus Running.

Upcoming Events and General Information:

If anyone knows of a student that would be interested in being a manager for the indoor and outdoor track team..>PLEASE send them to me!!!  I really need someone to take attendance each day at practice and do a few other duties.  The manager would not have to stay at practice the entire time.  I currently have 200 kids signed up for track and it will be really hard for me to keep attendance by myself if we have anywhere close to that number show up.   I do not expect that many to actually show up....but 120 or so will still be a lot!

EMAILS....   please do not think I am ignoring you if I do not respond to your emails.   Unless you ask me a specific question I will probably not respond.   I do read the emails and pay attention to them.... but I typically do not respond due to the LARGE number of emails I get each day.   Please continue to send me the emails... I like being informed about issues, but just do not be bothered by the fact that I might not be able to respond to them all.

PLEASE do your part in recruiting new athletes that can make our program stronger.  Please forward any emails and this web site address with upcoming 8th graders (or their parents) that you think might be interested in running OR anyone that is already at LRHS that you think might be interested!!!
